The Crucible
There are some examples of maturity in the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller.
One example of maturity is the maturing of John Proctor. In the beginning of the novel he is very closed minded and always argues with his wife. Him and his wife are always arguing because of the fact that john had supposedly had an affair with Abigail Williams. His wife is always accusing him and he is always saying he did not. He does "everything" to try and please her. he is not actually apologizing or admitting to the fact that he actually did have an affair with Abigail Williams. Toward the end of the story he matures and admits to his flaw and apologizes but his wife trying to save his honor lies to the leaders. John Proctor is then sentenced to death. Instead of giving the Witch Hunters more names he is going to take sacrifice his own life. He matured more then most of the other people did in his situation. Most of the other people who were prosecuted gave other names to save their lives
Another character who matures is Abigail Williams. She may not seem like she is mature but that is because she is mature in only two ways. Abigail is physically mature And she is mentally mature. She is physically mature because she is able to seduce John and make him an adulator. She is also mentally mature because she is able to use her mind to control the jury. She had to think about how they would react to certain situations and she could manipulate them in her favor. She is not mature emotionally, so she is swayed by her immature emotions. She keeps wanting to get back with John proctor even though he has flat out told her he does not want to. She also wants to get rid of John's wife because she is jealous of her being with proctor. Abigaill williams is a perfect example of someone who can be physically mature without actually being mature.
